But if you think outside the box, you’re able to look at a situation in ways that others might have overlooked thanks to your unique perspective and fresh angle. You can draw from your experience but also add new elements that were never considered before. You can consider how it all could be different rather than how it has always been.
6) Learn from your mistakes.
Mistakes are lessons disguised as disappointments; take them as such. When something doesn't go as planned, it's important to look at why, so that next time you'll know better. Everyone makes mistakes; what matters is how we learn from them and improve ourselves in the process.
7) Look at increasing efficiency.
Regardless of whether you are taking orders from customers, arranging meeting times with partners or suppliers, or setting up a new project, there are efficient ways for completing tasks. Just as there is no single right answer on any subject in life, there is no one best way of doing any particular business task. What matters is finding the right way for your business and making it happen.
8) Have a unique selling proposition.
A unique selling proposition (USP) is the core benefit you provide that makes you stand out in the minds of your customers. In order to win the game of business, you have to know what your USP is and how to communicate it clearly and effectively.
At the same time, you must intricately know your competitors (their strengths and weaknesses), and capitalize on what’s missing in the marketplace.
9) Hire people smarter than you.
Many entrepreneurs go out on their own because they don’t want to work for anyone else. They think they can do everything by themselves. They don’t want anyone telling them what to do, how to do it, or when to do it. But everyone needs help, everyone needs advice, everyone needs guidance and mentorship from time to time, and this is especially true in business.
Look for people with high intelligence. This way, your business can grow and expand. If you don’t have anyone around you who’s smarter than you, then it means that you have no one to push you and challenge your assumptions. Great ideas come from having smart people collaborate and challenge each other.
10) Know what wins within your industry (and understand the trends).
When starting a business, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of the bigger picture. In order to keep your business growing, you need to keep an eye on the market and learn from industry trends. This way, you'll be able to plan out your growth trajectory and avoid pitfalls that might delay your company's success.
11) Be ready to adapt.
Just because a method worked in the past doesn’t guarantee future success. If you see changes around you, then make sure that you understand those changes and adapt accordingly.
12) Don’t focus solely on profit.
It might sound counter-productive, but if profit becomes your biggest priority, then it will be difficult for you to do anything else well. For example, if you’re concerned about profit, you may be reluctant to hire enough the best employees or virtual assistants (i.e., the folks most qualified and skilled to help).
13) Remember that outsourcing can be an invaluable resource.
Outsourcing is a business practice that refers to contracts by which organizations hire outside assistance to perform specific tasks or services. Outsourcing business processes, rather than performing them in-house, can be a way for companies to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Some other benefits of outsourcing include increased speed and efficiency, lower labor costs, access to specialized skills and expertise not available within the budget, and a larger talent pool from which to draw candidates.
There is no one correct way to outsource business processes, nor is there an exact science for determining when it works best. The decision depends on several factors: the needs of the business, the nature of the process being outsourced, and the various options for outsourcing.
14) Focus on lead generation,
For any business to sustain and thrive, it needs leads. Leads are people who have expressed interest in your business's products or services, and they can be generated through a variety of activities that range from incentivizing people to sign up on your website, to advertising on social media channels, or even by hosting an event.
No matter where you are in the world, you’ll need to develop a lead generation strategy if you want to be successful at both attracting new business and keeping your existing customer base loyal and satisfied.
15) Believe in yourself and take risks.
In business, there’s a false dichotomy between risk and reward. There’s the idea that if you don’t take risks, you’ll be safe and secure, but you won’t be able to grow or get ahead. If you take risks, the thinking goes, you’ll be successful—but you’ll also be vulnerable to failure.
Winning the game of business is about playing by a distinct set of rules. It means balancing risk and reward in your favor by taking calculated risks and having thoughtful conversations with yourself about what you’re willing to risk.
We all have an internal monologue in our heads challenging us to prove we’re capable of greatness, of living up to our dreams. We second-guess ourselves when we’re pursuing something new, wondering if it’s worth it—and while these questions are usually positive and encouraging, they can also be paralyzing. Before we know it, we’re talking ourselves out of something before we ever even start.
The key is to use conversations with yourself as a tool by which to fuel your ambition instead of stifling it. Find the voice in your head that encourages you to pursue something great—the part that says “go for it”—and give it the power to influence you instead of holding you back.
